As part of a long term investment strategy by the owners of 1899 L Street a targeted design approach was initiated to improve the aesthetic appearance of this 1980’s era office building. The improvements included new signage for the retail tenants and the building, a complete lobby renovation, new tenant lobbies and a upgrades to the bathrooms. ADA accessibility upgrades were also an essential part of this project.
The largest part of this project is the main lobby renovation. The existing lobby is sheathed in travertine on the walls and floors. Additionally, black marble was also used as a wall material.
Our design sought to utilize the quality stone materials as a base palette but upgrade the quality of space by adding wood accents on top of the stone. Wood pilasters organize the lobby into six equal parts. To further soften the appearance of the stone finishes we applied a wood “pinstripe” throughout the design. And finally we installed art glass on one of the walls in the lobby to contrast with the stone and add a level of interest to the space.
