The repositioning of the United Unions, Inc., headquarters building included redesigning the entrances, main lobby, and surrounding plaza. The building, which sits at 1750 New York Avenue NW, houses the International Association of Fire Fighters and the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association. The renovation provides a higher profile for the revitalized Class A building, with a newly landscaped plaza and a bold new entry. New precast open stairs and a gracious entry platform leads visitors through a vestibule and into the lobby. The elegant new lobby features all new finishes as well as ceiling and lighting treatments and a two-story feature wall and stair that pay homage to the metal trades.

The lower level is home to a state-of-the-art fitness center with men’s and women’s steam rooms, lockers, showers, and restrooms. The upgrade also includes space for a full-service restaurant on the west side of the building. The new restaurant will have its own entry enclosure, mirroring that of the main entrance, on the plaza. Outdoor seating sheltered by a custom glass canopy will allow for pleasant views of Rawlins Park across the street.

This project was designed under the firm name Mancini Duffy/Winstanley and completed by Michael Winstanley Architects & Planners.
