Welcome to the Studio

The office of Winstanley Architects & Planners was established on the principle of collaborative endeavors amongst associated design professionals.

Architects. Planners. Designers.

Together. All at once.

Our multidisciplinary approach, much like a workshop, creates an environment for active exploration of project ideas from diverse points of view. By working in concert, the result is a comprehensive design solution that is unified and fuses the best elements of all disciplines.

From there, we let our finished projects speak on our behalf.

Francesca Franchi, AIA LEED is a highly accomplished, award-winning designer with a long history in guiding architectural teams both nationally and around the world. With more than 30 years of experience, she is passionate about creating memorable architecture and designing tactical spaces that cross a broad spectrum of markets. Her experience is extremely broad and ranges from adaptive reuse of small existing structures to tall mixed use skyscrapers in China and beyond.

Francesca first began working with Michael Winstanley in late 1990’s when the two teamed up to design multiple projects in the metro Washington area as well as many international assignments. She later went on to work with major international practices designing projects such as 222 Riverside Drive Residential Tower, NY; 3 Times Square, NY; 1899 Pennsylvania Avenue, DC; Rosslyn Central Place, DC; and, Carlyle Plaza Phase Two/ South Residential.

“Francesca will be an integral part of our ability to delivery award winning design work to our clients and I couldn’t be happier to be working with her again”, says Michael Winstanley AIA AICP, Founder and Design Director. “Our collaboration over the years has produced amazing results and I look froward to her contribution to our firm’s design legacy”.

A native of Lima, Peru, Francesca received her Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Ricardo Palma University of Lima and her Master of Architecture degree from Cornell University where she was awarded the Michael Rapuano Design Excellence Award. As a member of the DC AIA Design Excellence Committee, she is leading the 4x4=16 / South American Women in Architecture lecture series, which focuses on promoting the unique and outstanding design talent of women in the south of the American continent; a passion always present in her life.

Ponce Paradise Master Plan has received an Excellence Award from SARA National. The award celebrates design excellence in architecture and design through an annual National Design Awards Program.

Ponce Paradise represents a new paradigm in mixed-use development proposals by capitalizing on the natural beauty and restful nature of the Ponce environment. This new “Wellness Community” is comprised of essentially four elements supporting each other and all connected through a new canal carved into the site and connecting the ocean with the inland canals. The plan includes a resort lagoon surrounded by two hotels, a traditional neighborhood with a variety of vacation and single-family residences, a town center, medical university campus, and marina. The balance of the property is dedicated to newly established farming plots and a natural reserve protecting the existing wetlands.

The expansive terrain extends from the Caribbean Sea to the city center. The 821-acre site is flat and has great views of the Ocean and the neighboring natural reserve island of ‘Caja de Muertos’. It is located on a major highway and is immediately visible upon entering or leaving the city of Ponce, sitting between the port and the airport. A key design parameter has been to direct the water to enter the property, thereby rebuilding wetlands, beaches, and creating a world class canal. The wetlands on the Eastern section of the site will remain in its natural state and be placed into a protected conservation according to the Puerto Rico Conservation Easement Law. 180 acres have been set aside for a farm, orchard, and pasture will be dedicated for the harvesting of organic food and play an important element in Ponce Paradise’s wellness concept.

Every fall brings a poignant reminder of the Global War on Terrorism @gwotmf as we reflect on the attacks of September 11th, 2001, which sparked America’s longest war. Even as the war continues today, we at the Foundation are committed to honoring all who have served and sacrificed in this defining conflict.

We are excited to stay full speed ahead on securing a specific site for the Memorial on the National Mall. On October 18th, we met with the National Capital Memorial Advisory Commission (NCMAC), one of the authorities responsible for guiding the Foundation through the site selection and design process. We received feedback from NCMAC on several proposed sites for the Memorial and look forward to sharing an update with you as soon as possible about where the Memorial will live here in our nation’s capital
