Portrait Square (formerly known as Square 429) is a high-profile development for both an existing downtown church and a new office building in the historically protected Chinatown district of Washington, DC.

The design of the 200,000 sf project involves the incorporation of a 1929 Gothic revival classroom building inside the larger commercial building while consolidating and upgrading the church’s classroom and support program and providing assembly and gymnasium space.

The overall building contains 45,000 sf for the church program space, seven levels of office space, retail suites at street level, and four levels of below-grade parking. The project is articulated in three major segments in response to the scale of the historic neighborhood and adjacent buildings and presents a signature curving glass wall to announce the retail portion of the complex at the most visible corner of the site.

Michael Winstanley AIA AICP was the Design Principal for the project during his tenure as Design Director at Leo A Daly.
